The Slavia Project is part of the Slavia Foundation for Polish History and Culture. Our mission is to support, promote, and conduct interdisciplinary research in medieval, post-medieval and early modern archaeology in Poland and abroad. Since 1998, we have pursued this mission through field schools focused on mortuary archaeology. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about the protection of medieval and early modern burial grounds endangered by intensive agricultural practices. In many cases, this destruction cannot be prevented, making detailed archaeological excavation and documentation the only way to preserve this funerary cultural heritage. Unlike commercial archaeological rescue projects, which are often constrained by haste and rigorous timelines, the Slavia Project advocates for slower-paced research. We focus on recovering, documenting, and analyzing human skeletal remains, grave goods, and stratigraphy in order to preserve as much contextual information as possible. Through this work, we promote interdisciplinary, evidence-based research while providing practical, hands-on fieldwork training in mortuary archaeology and osteoarchaeology to students from around the world.
